ASU Advanced Service-Learning Topics Workshop Series for FALL 2009
Thanks to all of your feedback about what you need, what you want, and whom you'd like to hear from, we've designed a broad range of events and programs to help you most effectively utilize service-learning in your classroom.
Because we value your time and want to recognize you for taking steps toward professional development, ACT and Faculty & Academic Development have collaborated to provide you with the following rewards:
**If you attend at least 2 of these ACT workshops during the 2009-10 year...you may be selected to receive the service-learning book of your choice (up to $35). Up to 3 ASU faculty will be chosen.
***If you attend 3 or more workshops during the year, you may be eligible to have your conference fees paid for either the 12th Annual NC "Pathways to Achieving Civic Engagement" Conference (held at Elon University each February) or the 9th Annual International Research Conference on Service-Learning & Civic Engagement (held each October, location TBA). Up to 5 ASU faculty will be chosen!

As service-learning becomes increasingly widespread in higher education, more opportunities are emerging for S-L practitioners to pursue scholarship. This workshop will provide you with an overview of what to consider when developing a scholarly agenda in S-L, ideas for places in which to publish and present S-L scholarship, and resources for including your work with S-L in the review, promotion, and tenure process. You will also learn about NC Campus Compact's Research & Scholarship Initiative!

This won't be a lecture/workshop, but rather a chance for faculty and community partners to ear together and talk about specific collaborative research projects that can be conducted by either faculty or students. Take a more in-depth look at the impact of Health & Human Services action in our local community. A panel of local agency representatives who work on these important issues will offer a real world and local view of this important issue. Following the panel discussion, join us on a tour of three local agencies to gain a hands-on perspective of their day-to-day activities and services, as well as learn about the service-learning and community-based research opportunities for you and/or your students.
Changing Horizons of Expectation: Community Service-Learning & Music Education in the Greater Mangaung Area, South Africa -- Luncheon

Facilitator: Ms. Elene Coetzer, Professor of Music at the University of the Free State, South Africa
Learn about the development and challenges of the Manguang String Programme, along with issues related to compulsory service-learning in a University setting in South Africa. The Manguang String Programme is a music programme focused on helping children from historically disadvantaged backgrounds in rural areas. Under the guidance of Ms Coetzer, the programme has grown from 30 young learners in 2000 to nearly 500 in 2009, including children from isolated rural areas in the greater Free State Province.
Elene’s Bio
Elene Coetzer earned a Bachelors Honours Cum Laude in Music in 2005, and a Bachelors Honours in Language Studies in 2007 from the University of the Free State, South Africa. In 2000 she began her career as music educator within the Manguang String Programme. She oversees beginner violin tuition, beginner orchestra tuition and music theory classes and mentors future music educators within the string programme.
In 2008 she implemented and now coordinates the community service-learning module of the Music Department at the University of the Free State. This module is compulsory to all final year students in the Music department.
In July 2009, she presented her research and work at the international conference of Music in Society in Venice, Italy. She plans to complete her Masters in Music Education in 2010.
