2010 INTERNATIONAL ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK (iASB) COURSES

ACT is sponsoring 7 International Alternative Spring Break courses to Belize, Costa Rica (x2), Dominican Republic, Egypt, Guatemala, and Jamaica!  Learn more about the 2010 International Alternative Spring Break courses.

"In the Dominican Republic during an Alternative Spring Break Trip I saw children who had been abandoned, people without clean water, and people with scarce food resources. There was need everywhere, and I didn't feel like there was much I could do about any of it. When children flocked around my classmates and I on the playground to see our cameras, ask for piggyback rides, or simply peer up curiously, I understood that though I couldn't fulfill the needs of all these children, I could give them my love and attention. To make them feel as though for that week, their school playground was where all the excitement of the world was. This I could do, and I did, and my classmates did, and the young Dominican children needed that, too."

International Partnership for Service-Learning & Leadership

Appalachian State University has partnered with the International Partnership for Service-Learning & Leadership to provide ASU with long term international service-learning opportunities.  Check out this scholarship opportunity (up to $1500) for approved study abroad programs!

Founded in 1982, IPS-L is an incorporated not-for-profit organization serving colleges, universities, service agencies and related organizations around the world by fostering programs that link community service and academic study.

IPS-L initiates, designs, and administers off-campus undergraduate programs in Ecuador, Mexico, Jamaica, the Lakota Nation (US), Italy, India, and Thailand. In cooperation with Portand State Univeristy, IPS-L also administers an 18-month Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies: Focus in International Service-Learning & Leadership (MAIS) program integrates rigorous academic study with substantive volunteer service in two nations, giving students opportunities to test theoretical knowledge through hands-on, practical experience in different cultures.

Since 1982, more than 3,000 students from over 400 American and foreign universities have participated in IPS-L programs. Both students and the host communities benefit from the substantial service each student gives. By studying at a local university and serving 15-20 hours per week in a school, orphanage, health clinic or other agency addressing human needs, students find their knowledge of the host culture--and of themselves-- take on greater depth and meaning.

For more information, visit the IPSL website at www.ipsl.org.
