Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week

November 13-19, 2011
Each year, the week before Thanksgiving, the National Coalition for Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsors Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week. At ASU this week is filled with special events intended to increase awareness about the issues of poverty, hunger, and homelessness. The week is a collaboration between ACT, ASU Ambassadors, and SGA.
Pledge to help end hunger by attending an event or volunteering your time during the week.
Sunday, November 13th: Leigh Lane Day of Service – 12:30-4:00 – Meet at Legends at 12:30. Join us for an afternoon of service at the Hospitality House in memory of Appalachian student, Leigh Lane Edwards, who while a student at ASU worked passionately with issues of hunger and homesslessness as well as international service and study. Learn more about Leigh Lane Edwards and the scholarship set up in her memory.
Monday, November 14th: Can-struction – 11:00-until – Solarium, Plemmons Student Union (Co-sponsored by Student Ambassadors and ASIDS)

Tuesday, November 15th : Oxfam Hunger Banquet – 6:30pm-7:30pm – Linville Falls, Plemmons Student Union (Co-sponsored by SGA)
Sign-up for this this SGA sponsored event in the ACT Outreach Center(near McAllister’s Deli in the Union) between Monday, November 7th and Friday, November 11th. SIGN-UP IS REQUIRED. At an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet, guests randomly draw tickets that assign them to different income levels, based on the latest statistics about the number of people living in poverty. Wednesday, November 16th: Poverty Simulation – 6:00pm-8:30pm – Great Hall, Living Learning Center
Ever wonder why there are people experiencing hunger and homelessness? Sign-up for this event to learn more about the real-life events that plunge people into difficult circumstances. Sign-up in the ACT Outreach Center (near McAllister’s Deli in the Union) between Monday, November 7th and Friday, November 11th. SIGN-UP IS REQUIRED.
Thursday, November 17th: Documentary & Panel Discussion – 6:30pm-8:30pm – Greenbriar

Friday, November 18th: Sleep Out – 6:00pm-6:00am – Sanford Mall
Join Phi Beta Sigma as they raise awareness about Hunger & Homelessness and bring your gently used clothing and canned foods for donation! (Co-sponsored by Phi Beta Sigma)
Saturday, November 19th: The Gobbler 5K – 8:30am (registration begins at 7:00am) – Duck Pond Field
ACT’s first 5K! All money raised will benefit the ACT Leigh Lane Edwards Scholarship for international service-learning. Once the race is completed, wipe your sweat away and enjoy fresh cobbler on Duck Pond Field! Check out the Gobbler website for more information. All who register before October 31 are guaranteed a race t-shirt. RUNNERS AND WALKER WELCOME!

Food Stamp Challenge
Ever wonder how people survive when they rely on public assistance to feed their families? Join us for this educational challenge by participating in the Food Stamp Challenge - a challenge to live for 1 lweek on the average food stamp allotment. Sign-up in at the contact table in the Student Union 11:00am-4:00pm between Monday, November 7th and Friday, November 11th. SIGN-UP IS REQUIRED. Check out the national website for more info.
Canned Food Drive
The Student Ambassadors are hosting the canned food drive.
- October 29th: Black Out Hunger on Black Saturday, Can Collection at the Rock during the Football game vs. Georgia Southern
- November 7-11: Can Collection Week locations: Student Union Marketplace from 10-4pm everyday and Trivette Hall from 5-10pm
